West Coast Pale Ale: A Refreshing Classic Beer Style Endures in Vancouver
Sometimes wine enthusiasts need a break from their usual beverage of choice. Many winemakers themselves will confess that after a long day working among the vines or in the winery, they often reach for what they call "a cleansing ale." This raises an important question for beer lovers: which ale should one choose? Recently, the enduring and refreshing qualities of West Coast pale ale have been receiving renewed attention in Vancouver's craft beer scene.
What Exactly Is a West Coast Pale Ale?
According to the formal Beer Judge Certification Program beer style guidelines, West Coast pale ale isn't even recognized as a standalone style. The closest official category would be American pale ale, described as "an average-strength, hop-forward, pale American craft beer with sufficient supporting malt to make the beer balanced and drinkable." However, the guidelines themselves acknowledge they're not absolute commandments. In practical terms, West Coast pale ale represents a specific regional interpretation characterized by bold hop aromatics, balanced bitterness, and refreshing crispness.
Three Vancouver Breweries Showcase the Style
Twin Sails Brewing Locals Only West Coast Pale Ale, Port Moody
Available at select private liquor stores for approximately $16.50 for four 473mL cans, this beer exemplifies the West Coast pale ale style. It features bold aromatics of citrus and pine with a malty underlay, complemented by equally bold bitterness and bracing crispness. At 4.8% alcohol, it delivers great tropical and floral tones in the finish.
Container Brewing Twenty Footer Pale Ale, East Vancouver
Priced around $16 for four 473mL cans at select private liquor stores, this beer pours a glorious copper color and offers aromas of malt, citrus, and pine. With a mere 4.3% alcohol content, it provides a sharp bite up front that remains zippy throughout. The brewery describes it as "as crisp and refreshing as a mountain stream," making it an excellent pairing with salmon and chips.
Superflux Beer Company Easy Tiger Pale Ale, East Vancouver
Available for $16.49 for four 473mL cans, this beer represents a modern interpretation of the West Coast pale ale style. At 4.5% alcohol, it features a wheat-based foundation that creates a hazy pour with added smoothness and fruity finish. The Australian and American hops bring more orange zest and tropical tones than traditional pine and citrus notes, finishing herbaceous and fresh. It pairs exceptionally well with take-out Thai cuisine.
The Appeal of West Coast Pale Ales
All three featured beers demonstrate the key characteristics that make West Coast pale ales appealing to craft beer enthusiasts. They feature prominent hop profiles at refreshingly reasonable alcohol levels, typically ranging from 4.3% to 4.8%. These are not watered-down IPAs but rather lip-smacking, standalone session ales perfect for extended enjoyment.
