Toronto's Tails Farewell Provides Compassionate Pet Funeral Services

In a city where pets are cherished as family members, Tails Farewell in Toronto is offering specialized funeral services to help owners navigate the difficult process of saying goodbye to their beloved animal companions. The business, which opened its Toronto location in September following an earlier launch in Markham, provides a range of options from water-based cremation to full funeral ceremonies.

Honoring Pets as Family Members

Tails Farewell recognizes that pets hold a special place in families, offering services for dogs, cats, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, rabbits, birds, and other animals within certain size parameters. Business partner Jason Lau explains that the concept has become increasingly popular in Hong Kong over the past decade, where pet aftercare services have become saturated, but remains relatively novel in Canada.

"When I came to Canada, I did some research and found there was no one doing this," said Lau. "Usually people just went through veterinarians and clinics, which don't have the resources or time to help people through this difficult period. It's usually a clinical setting."

Eco-Friendly Aquamation and Service Options

The company's signature service is pet aquamation, a gentle process that uses water instead of fire for cremation. This method is more environmentally friendly than traditional cremation and represents one of three basic services offered by Tails Farewell.

Service packages include:

  • Communal aquamation starting at $249 for cats and dogs, with ashes scattered in Rouge National Urban Park
  • Individual aquamation with returned ashes, digital certificate, and classic urn starting at $399 for small pets
  • Premium packages up to $999 including ink paw prints, fur clippings, and farewell sessions

Farewell Sessions and Funeral Services

Tails Farewell offers dedicated farewell sessions where owners can say goodbye in a peaceful environment decorated with flowers, favorite treats, toys, and photos. The company also provides full funeral services with prepared eulogies and celebration of life gatherings for family and friends.

"We find that people are very grateful that this kind of service exists now," said Lau, who owns four cats himself. "With the peaceful environment we provide, they find the closure they need to say a proper goodbye. They treat their pets like humans, like family members. I always tell people I have four kids at home."

Memorial Keepsakes and Growing Demand

Additional memorial options include cremated jewelry mixed with pet hair or fur, watercolor portraits, oil paintings, and various urn designs. The most popular package at the Toronto location has been the Eternal Memory Package, starting at $549.

The Markham location has already served approximately 700 pets since opening a year and a half ago, indicating growing demand for these specialized services. Lau's personal experience with losing a childhood cat at age 13 without proper closure inspired his commitment to providing comprehensive pet aftercare.

"I couldn't get any ashes. I couldn't get the closure I needed," he recalled. "I didn't get any keepsakes or a farewell session. There was always something missing in my heart."

As pet ownership continues to evolve with animals increasingly viewed as family members, services like those offered by Tails Farewell provide important emotional support during difficult transitions, helping Toronto pet owners honor their companions' lives with dignity and respect.
