Guardian Marine Rescue Calls for Volunteers to Bolster Great Lakes Water Rescue Efforts
Guardian Marine Rescue, a dedicated volunteer unit operating under the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, has officially launched a recruitment campaign aimed at expanding its team of search and rescue volunteers. This initiative seeks to strengthen marine safety across critical waterways, including Lakes Erie and St. Clair, as well as the Detroit River, from strategic bases located in Colchester and Belle River within Essex County.
Essential Role in Community Safety
The unit plays a vital role in responding to emergencies, assisting disabled vessels, and ensuring the overall safety of boaters navigating Essex County's extensive waterways. Tyler Burniston, coxswain with Guardian Marine Rescue, emphasized the importance of a well-prepared volunteer force, stating, "Fast response on the water depends on having trained, reliable volunteers ready to respond. We are seeking local individuals who are dependable and committed." He further highlighted that the most crucial attribute for applicants is a willingness to learn and collaborate as part of a community-serving team.
Comprehensive Training Provided
Prospective volunteers do not need prior search and rescue experience. Guardian Marine Rescue offers extensive training covering:
- Vessel operations and navigation
- Radio communications protocols
- Emergency response procedures
This training provides hands-on experience in operating rescue vessels, functioning within a coordinated response team, and making critical decisions in dynamic, fast-changing environments. Holly Lucier, a crew member, noted, "Things can change in a matter of seconds on the water. Knowing that we have a trained crew ready to respond quickly reinforces how important our role is in protecting the community."
Application Requirements and Community Support
Applicants must meet specific criteria to join the team:
- Reside locally within the operational area
- Be capable of responding from either the Colchester or Belle River stations
- Possess a valid pleasure craft operator card
Guardian Marine Rescue operates entirely through trained volunteers, underscoring its community-driven mission. For those unable to participate as crew members, the organization welcomes donations to support its operations. This recruitment effort follows a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony held by the Municipality of Lakeshore on May 30, 2024, celebrating a new operating agreement with Guardian Marine Rescue. The event, attended by Lakeshore Mayor Tracey Bailey and other dignitaries, highlighted the collaborative commitment to enhancing marine safety in the region.
