When the crate door opened, Nicole Miller and her family watched with bated breath as Joey, a beagle with soulful droopy eyes, slowly emerged from his confinement. The Miller family crouched silently on the floor, allowing the nervous dog to approach at his own pace.
"He went to the kids first," Miller recalled. "Seeing him come out and immediately come to people was really heartwarming for us."
Joey was one of five beagles who recently made the journey across the Canada-U.S. border after being liberated from research facilities where they had been used as test animals. Their rescue represents a significant triumph for animal welfare advocates who work tirelessly to give these dogs a second chance at life.

"They have never had a choice in their life," Cohen emphasized. "They were bred right into testing. So this is now their first opportunity to choose sleep on the couch or choose to play with another dog or pick up a toy."

Cohen explained that beagles have become a popular choice for laboratory testing due to their gentle temperament and manageable size. "They're very forgiving and they really just don't bite back," she said, describing the breed's docile, sweet nature that unfortunately makes them vulnerable to exploitation in research settings.
First Steps Toward Healing
In a small room in southeast Calgary, the five rescued beagles slowly emerged from their crates, cautiously exploring their new environment. Their back legs shook as they gingerly accepted pets and scratches from their new foster families, sniffing at outstretched hands with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension.
The Miller family, who agreed to foster Joey, plan to introduce him gradually to their resident golden retriever in their backyard. "She is going to be very excited, but I think she's a docile dog and she'll let them have space," Miller said of their current pet.

Prior to taking in Joey, the Miller family engaged in extensive discussions about what it means to foster an animal with a traumatic background. "Talking to our kids about animal testing has been a new conversation," Miller noted. "And then learning about the traumas that certain dogs come with. They've never had that experience with a dog before, so we're learning a lot about scared behaviors and being so gentle and letting them come out on their own and not forcing too much on them at the same time."
The family has committed to moving at a pace comfortable for Joey, allowing him to gradually adjust to his new life outside laboratory walls.
