The familiar and heartwarming tradition of Sporting Christmas is back for another year, calling on the community's generous spirit to support the Salvation Army's vital Christmas hamper program. Launching the 2025 campaign, the initiative continues its decades-long mission of ensuring families in need can experience the joy and comfort of the holiday season.
A Legacy of Compassion Since 1976
The program has a rich history, dating back to its inaugural launch on November 16, 1976, by then-StarPhoenix sports columnist Larry Tucker. His direct and heartfelt plea, "We want your money," set the tone for a campaign built on transparency and immediate action. While technology and times have changed since those typewriter days, the core mission remains critically unchanged: addressing hunger and holiday hardship in the community.
Regrettably, the need Tucker identified nearly five decades ago persists. Many individuals and families still face the stress of food insecurity, wondering where their next meal will come from. This anxiety is amplified during the Christmas season, when the pressure to provide gifts for children and a special holiday meal becomes overwhelming.
How Your Donation Makes a Difference
Every dollar donated to Sporting Christmas goes directly to the Salvation Army for its Christmas hamper program. These hampers are more than just a holiday gesture; they provide a week's worth of food, including a ham or turkey, and allow parents to select new toys for their children.
The campaign has seen remarkable success, demonstrating the community's unwavering generosity. For the fifth consecutive year, the campaign surpassed the $100,000 mark in 2024, raising a total of $101,595.25. Since its humble beginnings, Sporting Christmas has collectively raised an astounding $2,618,204.26 for local families.
Your Help is Needed More Than Ever
With the explosive growth in food prices stretching household budgets thinner than ever, the demand for these holiday hampers remains high. The program creates countless happy and warm Christmas memories for recipients, and that magic still needs to happen this year.
The call to action is simple. If you have a few extra dollars and wish to contribute to something that makes a tangible difference, please consider donating. Contributions can be made in memory of loved ones or as a tribute to a favourite team. Every kind gesture, no matter the size, helps build a brighter Christmas for your neighbours in Saskatoon.
