Sedins Champion Vancouver School Breakfast Program, Seek $35,000 in Donations
Sedins Lead Adopt-A-School Campaign for Vancouver Children

Former Vancouver Canucks legends Henrik and Daniel Sedin recently traded the hockey rink for a breakfast service line, using their star power to highlight a critical community cause. The twins, alongside Daniel's wife Marinette, personally handed out grab-and-go meals at the Strathcona Community Centre, drawing excited crowds from the adjacent Lord Strathcona Elementary School.

A Call to Action for Hungry Children

The event on December 15, 2025, was more than a celebrity appearance; it was a direct appeal for public support. The breakfast program, which feeds approximately 250 children daily, has relied for years on The Vancouver Sun Children’s Fund Adopt-A-School campaign. This year, the program urgently requires $35,000 to continue purchasing food.

Henrik Sedin emphasized the growing need in the community. "We are hoping to raise awareness that school programs and food banks require more help. There’s a need for other people stepping up," he stated. The Sedins' presence aimed to encourage donors to contribute to the AAS campaign, which supports impoverished children and families lacking food, clothing, and other essentials.

The Sustained Impact of the Sedin Family Foundation

While their on-ice prowess spoke volumes, the Sedins' philanthropic work is equally impactful. Through the Sedin Family Foundation, established after their retirement, they have consistently funded worthy causes. "We believe it’s a responsibility to help where we can," Henrik explained, recalling their desire to give back to Vancouver from the start of their careers.

The foundation's commitment is substantial and strategic:

  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, a $35,000 seed donation from the Sedins ignited an AAS campaign that ultimately raised $800,000, funding food distribution from school parking lots during closures.
  • Most recently, the foundation provided a $126,000 donation to the Children’s Fund, specifically earmarked for six northern B.C. schools seeking AAS assistance.

Addressing Disparity in Northern Communities

The significant donation to northern B.C. is intentional. Daniel Sedin pointed out that families in these regions often lack access to the social, medical, and civic services available in larger southern metropolitan areas. This funding will help address dire needs for food, winter clothing, and other essentials in these more isolated communities.

The Sedins' advocacy underscores a persistent issue across the province. As the Adopt-A-School campaign continues its efforts, the call from these beloved sports figures is clear: community support is vital to ensure no child starts their school day hungry. The campaign's success hinges on the public joining the Sedins in their mission.
