Wood's Homes Opens Emergency Warming Centre for Calgary Youth
Calgary warming centre opens Dec 1 for youth in need

As Calgary's winter tightens its grip, a vital new refuge is preparing to open its doors for young people facing the harsh elements. Non-profit organization Wood's Homes has announced it will operate an emergency warming centre from December 1, 2025, until March 31, 2026.

A Comprehensive Haven from the Cold

The initiative, located at the organization's Inglewood Opportunity Hub, is designed to be far more than just a warm place to sit. It will offer a full suite of essential services to help vulnerable youth survive the winter months. These critical resources include access to hot showers, laundry facilities, daily meals, food hampers, hygiene products, and warm clothing.

The centre will be open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., specifically for youth up to 29 years of age who are experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity.

Beyond Basic Needs: Connecting to Long-Term Support

While providing immediate relief from the cold is the primary goal, the space also aims to connect young people with wraparound services that address the root causes of their situation. This includes providing access to mental health support and resources to help them find stable, long-term housing.

Bjorn Johansson, CEO of Wood's Homes, emphasized the life-saving nature of this service. "Winter can be life-threatening for young people without stable housing and resources," Johansson stated. "Every gift, big or small, offers warmth, safety, and connection when it's needed most."

Community Support is Crucial

To make this vital service possible, Wood's Homes is actively seeking support from the Calgary community. The non-profit is welcoming donations of various items to aid the city's youth.

The organization has specifically requested:

  • Warm clothing, boots, and coats
  • Hand or foot warmers
  • Hygiene essentials
  • Bus tickets
  • Non-perishable food items

Johansson added that community generosity sends a powerful message to young people in crisis, showing them that "help is here, they're not alone, and we won't give up." This warming centre represents a critical intervention for Calgary's most vulnerable youth during the coldest season.
