Los Cabos Tourism Officials Declare: 'Every Canadian Is Worth Two Americans'
Tourism officials in Los Cabos, Mexico, have made a striking declaration about the value of Canadian visitors, with data showing they outspend their American counterparts by a remarkable two-to-one margin. According to recent figures from the Los Cabos Tourism Observatory, Canadians represent the second-largest foreign tourist market in this west coast Mexican destination, trailing only behind Americans in total numbers.
Canadian Visitors Driving Growth in Mexican Destination
The statistics reveal a compelling story of shifting tourism patterns. In 2025, more than 215,000 Canadians visited Los Cabos, representing a significant 10 percent increase over 2024 numbers. This growth stands in stark contrast to American tourism, which remained nearly flat with just a 0.1 percent increase during the same period. With tourism from other international markets declining, Canadian visitors accounted for almost all of the region's tourism growth.
"Every Canadian is worth two Americans," stated Rodrigo Esponda, managing director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board, capturing the economic reality revealed by the tourism data. "Canadian travellers are seeking more meaningful experiences, places where they feel safe, welcomed, and inspired. Los Cabos delivers that balance of exclusivity and authenticity."
Changing Travel Patterns and Preferences
The growth in Canadian visitors reflects broader changes in travel preferences and accessibility. Suzanne Acton-Gervais, president of the Association of Canadian Travel Agencies and Travel Advisors, noted that Los Cabos is benefiting from strong Canadian demand for sun destinations while also appealing to travelers looking beyond traditional resort experiences.
"We are seeing travellers look beyond traditional resort destinations and explore different parts of Mexico that offer a broader range of experiences," Acton-Gervais explained. "For many travellers, Los Cabos offers a combination of reliable air access, strong tourism infrastructure, and experiences that go beyond a traditional beach holiday."
Air Travel Expansion Signals Market Confidence
Transportation data underscores the growing importance of the Canadian market. According to the Los Cabos Tourism Observatory, Canada represents the fastest-growing international air travel market for the destination. Available flights to Mexico from Canada have increased by nine percent for the first half of 2026, with Toronto alone experiencing an 18.6 percent increase in available flights compared to the previous year.
This expansion contrasts with trends in the United States, where flights to Mexico are expected to decrease by five percent in Dallas, 3.6 percent in Houston, and 1.9 percent nationally. Flights from other international markets are also projected to decline slightly.
"Canada has evolved into a core market for Los Cabos, not just a seasonal source of winter travel," Esponda emphasized in an interview with Travel Industry Today. "Airlines are expanding service because demand is strong, consistent and increasingly nationwide. What we're seeing now is long-term market confidence."
The combination of increased spending, growing visitor numbers, and expanding air access positions Canadian tourists as increasingly vital to the Los Cabos tourism economy, creating a dynamic shift in the destination's international visitor profile.
