Calgary Solidifies Status as Leading Convention Destination in Canada
Calgary has experienced a remarkable surge in its convention and meetings sector, firmly establishing itself as a premier destination that now rivals other major Canadian metropolitan centers like Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. The city's strategic investments in infrastructure and tourism development have propelled it into the top tier of convention locations nationwide.
Record-Breaking Year for Meetings and Conventions
Last year proved exceptionally busy for Calgary's convention industry, with Tourism Calgary actively involved in 159 significant meetings and conventions. These events alone were projected to deliver an impressive $240 million in economic impact to the local economy, demonstrating the substantial financial benefits of this growing sector.
Carson Ackroyd, senior vice-president of sales at Tourism Calgary, emphasized that multiple factors are driving this growth. "From the Calgary International Airport to new convention facilities and tourist attractions designed to keep convention attendees in town longer, we're seeing comprehensive development across all areas," Ackroyd explained.
Infrastructure Advantages and Airport Connectivity
Calgary's transportation infrastructure provides a significant competitive advantage. "Calgary has the best connected mid-sized airport in all of North America," Ackroyd noted. "From a delegate experience perspective, being able to reach the destination quickly represents a huge advantage for event organizers and attendees alike."
The city's convention facilities have undergone substantial expansion, particularly with the opening of the BMO Centre expansion in 2024. This development created the largest convention space in western Canada, dramatically increasing Calgary's capacity to host major events.
Expanded Capacity and Future Growth
"Given the scale and size of our facilities, we're now positioned to welcome much larger conventions than we could historically accommodate," Ackroyd stated. "The increased capacity has opened doors to events that previously would have been beyond our reach."
This expansion has created a ripple effect throughout Calgary's hospitality industry. "When you open new capacity, you need hotel rooms for those delegates to stay," Ackroyd explained. "We have strong existing hotel capacity, but that's about to grow with new hotels that have been announced, including the Autograph Collection Hotel that has already broken ground on Stampede Park."
Tourism Benefits and Extended Stays
The convention boom translates directly into tourism growth, as many attendees extend their stays to experience what Calgary has to offer. "We are surrounded by five UNESCO World Heritage Sites, we have the incredible Rocky Mountains, an exceptional food scene, and great attractions right here in Calgary," Ackroyd highlighted.
Statistics reveal the significant tourism impact: "When people come to conventions, approximately two-thirds of those individuals stay to become tourists after their convention concludes," Ackroyd reported.
Major Future Events and Partnerships
Calgary has secured several high-profile future conventions through collaborative efforts with various partners. Upcoming events include VoucherCon in 2026, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2027, and the International Society for Autism Research in 2028.
Educational institutions in Calgary have played a crucial role in this success. Universities and colleges partner with Tourism Calgary to bid on events that faculty members previously attended as professionals. This strategy recently resulted in Calgary securing the bid to host the International Geological Congress in 2028.
"This event was previously held in Busan, Korea, and will come to Calgary in 2028," Ackroyd announced. "We expect to welcome approximately 6,000 geologists from around the world to our city for this prestigious quadrennial gathering."
Spring and fall remain the busiest seasons for conventions and meetings in Calgary, but the city's growing reputation and enhanced facilities suggest year-round potential for continued expansion in this vital economic sector.
