Bahamas DPM Chester Cooper Named UNWTO Vice-President

The Bahamas has secured a significant position in global tourism leadership as Deputy Prime Minister I. Chester Cooper steps into the role of Vice-President at the United Nations World Tourism Organization General Assembly.

Historic Appointment for Caribbean Tourism

During the high-level opening session in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on November 9, 2025, The Hon. I. Chester Cooper, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation, officially assumed his responsibilities as Vice-President of the UNWTO General Assembly. The Bahamian delegation, which included Director General Latia Duncombe, participated in the prestigious international gathering that brings together tourism ministers and leaders from across the globe.

Cooper will collaborate closely with Ahmed bin Aqil alKhateeb, the elected President of the UNWTO General Assembly and Minister of Tourism for Saudi Arabia, along with other international tourism authorities. Their collective mission focuses on advancing sustainable, inclusive, and resilient tourism practices worldwide.

Caribbean Representation on Global Stage

"This appointment is a proud moment for The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean," declared Deputy Prime Minister Cooper during the assembly. "It reflects our region's deep commitment to tourism as a driver of opportunity and cultural connection."

The Bahamian leader emphasized his dedication to ensuring that the perspectives of small island nations remain central to discussions about tourism's future. "I am honoured to contribute to this global forum," Cooper stated. "The Bahamas stands ready to work with our international partners to build a sector that is more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable."

Progressive Leadership in Global Tourism

This vice-presidency follows Cooper's earlier election during the UNWTO Regional Commission for the Americas meeting held in Lima, Peru. The current UNWTO General Assembly in Riyadh serves as a crucial platform for tourism ministers and industry leaders to address the ongoing transformation and growth within the global tourism sector.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments & Aviation has extended its congratulations to Deputy Prime Minister Cooper on this distinguished appointment. The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to supporting his leadership at this elevated global level, recognizing the importance of having Caribbean representation in international tourism governance.

With over 700 islands and cays comprising 16 unique island destinations, The Bahamas represents a vital tourism economy in the Caribbean region. Located just 50 miles off the coast of Florida, the island nation offers world-class fishing, diving, boating, and thousands of miles of spectacular beaches that attract families, couples, and adventurers from around the world.

This appointment positions The Bahamas at the forefront of global tourism policy discussions, particularly as the industry navigates challenges related to sustainability, climate resilience, and inclusive economic development.
