Monty the Hound Awaits a Loving Home After 443 Days in Oakville Shelter
The Humane Society of Oakville, Milton and Halton (HSOMH) is making a heartfelt plea for the adoption of Monty, a five-year-old male hound who has been their resident for an astonishing 443 days. This playful and goofy dog has captured the hearts of shelter staff, but his prolonged stay highlights the challenges faced by animals in need of forever homes.
A Special Weekend for a Special Dog
To increase Monty's chances of finding a family, HSOMH has organized a dedicated adoption weekend on March 14 and 15. The event will take place at their facility located at 445 Cornwall Rd. in Oakville, with hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. No appointments are necessary, but potential adopters are encouraged to bring all household members as part of the process.
In a generous gesture, there is no adoption fee for Monty, thanks to a donor who stepped forward to support his journey. If connections are made during the weekend, visitors can complete an adoption application and consult with an adoption counsellor on-site.
Understanding Monty's Needs and Personality
Monty is described as a dog with a vibrant and quirky personality. He is extremely food-motivated, thriving on treats like kibble, beef liver, and bully sticks, which aid in his training. Shelter staff note that he is working diligently on impulse control and offers a polite sit instead of jumping when excited.
However, Monty requires a specific home environment to flourish. The ideal setting is an adult-only household (18+) with experience in managing resource guarding and understanding dog body language. He should be the only pet, with no other dogs or cats, and a home without shared walls is preferred due to his potential for alert barking. A fenced backyard would be beneficial for him to safely release energy and decompress after walks.
Challenges and Progress in Shelter Life
Monty's long stay at the shelter equates to over 14 months, a duration that staff humorously compare to watching Titanic more than 3,500 times or binging the entire Friends series over 130 times. Transferred from another shelter, he has shown resilience and daily progress despite the stresses of kennel life.
He can be reactive to other dogs on leash and may resource guard high-value toys, but these behaviors are manageable with proper care. Additionally, Monty sometimes chases large vehicles like SUVs but redirects quickly with treats. He is currently taking Gabapentin to alleviate shelter stress, though this may not be necessary long-term once he settles into a stable home with veterinary guidance.
A Bright Future Ahead
Despite these challenges, Monty is crate trained, house trained, and excels on leash walks, especially after burning off energy. He enjoys fetch, chasing balls, and knows commands like sit and down, showcasing his intelligence and eagerness to please.
HSOMH emphasizes that Monty is friendly, fun, and delightfully quirky, with a personality that keeps everyone smiling. His story underscores the importance of adoption and the transformative power of a loving home. As the shelter community rallies behind him, they hope this special weekend will finally bring Monty the raw deal he deserves—a forever family to call his own.
