Canadian Study Reveals Overwhelming Emotional Benefits of Pet Ownership
A groundbreaking new survey conducted by Angus Reid and PetSmart Charities of Canada has uncovered compelling evidence about the profound emotional impact pets have on their owners. The study, which polled over 1,000 Canadian pet owners, found that an astonishing 96% of respondents reported that having a pet significantly improved their emotional well-being.
Community Connections Strengthened Through Pet Ownership
Beyond individual emotional benefits, the research revealed that pet ownership fosters stronger community bonds. The survey found that 45% of Canadian pet owners say adding a pet to their family deepened their sense of community connection. This enhanced social engagement occurs through various channels including interactions with neighbors, fellow pet owners, and local animal shelters.
"We've seen that Canadian pet parents overwhelmingly benefit from adding a pet to their family," said Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities of Canada, in an official statement accompanying the survey results.
Specific Emotional Benefits Identified
The survey delved deeper into the specific emotional advantages reported by pet owners:
- 39% of respondents ranked comfort and companionship as the number one benefit of pet ownership
- 19% identified increased happiness as their top emotional benefit, with those under 55 more likely to cite this advantage
- 12% reported reduced stress or anxiety as their primary benefit from having a pet
Supporting Pet Adoption Nationwide
In conjunction with these findings, PetSmart Charities of Canada announced a significant investment in pet adoption support. The organization is providing $450,000 in adoption support grants to animal shelters and rescue partners across the country.
"This year, we're excited to continue this trend through $450,000 in adoption support grants to our animal shelter and rescue partners," Gilbreath explained. "They are working tirelessly to intake new pets, support their adoption journey and help every pet find the loving home they've been waiting for."
National Adoption Initiative
From March 23–29, 2026, local animal shelters and rescues will bring adoptable pets—including dogs, cats, rabbits, and small animals of all ages and personalities—to PetSmart stores across Canada. This initiative aims to connect people with potential pets while supporting the adoption process nationwide.
Survey Methodology and Significance
The survey was conducted by PetSmart Charities of Canada from March 11-12, 2026, among a representative sample of 1,004 online Canadians with pets who are members of the Angus Reid Forum. For comparison purposes, a probability sample of this size would carry a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
These findings provide substantial evidence supporting what many pet owners have long believed—that their animal companions provide significant emotional and social benefits that extend beyond simple companionship to create meaningful improvements in overall quality of life.
