Unattended Cooking Leads to Devastating House Fire
A dangerous kitchen fire erupted on Wednesday evening in Windsor's west end, forcing two people from their home and resulting in substantial damage. The incident occurred at a residence on the 2100 block of Second Avenue, highlighting the very real risks of leaving cooking unattended.
Neighbour's Quick Action and Firefighter Response
The Windsor Fire and Rescue Services were dispatched to the scene at approximately 8:15 p.m. after reports of smoke emanating from the building. Officials confirmed that a vigilant neighbour first spotted the smoke, forced the front door open, and discovered active flames on the kitchen stove.
Fire crews worked diligently to contain the blaze, successfully bringing it under control by 9:50 p.m. A subsequent investigation by fire officials pinpointed the cause: chicken grease left unattended on a hot stove.
Significant Damage and a Critical Safety Warning
While fortunately no injuries were reported, the consequences of the fire were severe. Two residents have been displaced from their home. Early estimates place the property damage at approximately $100,000.
In light of this incident, Windsor fire officials are reiterating a vital safety message. They strongly advise residents to remain in the kitchen at all times while cooking or using kitchen appliances to prevent similar tragedies.
This fire serves as a stark reminder, coming just weeks after another unattended cooking fire on Marentette Avenue displaced 18 people and caused an estimated $200,000 in damage.
