Markham Residence Blends Architecture and Personal Artistry
In a remarkable fusion of architecture and personal expression, a custom-built home in Markham has been transformed into more than just a living space—it serves as a dedicated gallery for the homeowner's photography. The design, spearheaded by Jane Lockhart of Jane Lockhart Design, intentionally weaves the owner's artistic talents into the very fabric of the residence.
Design Philosophy: Art as the Heart of the Home
"The design intentionally creates a deeply personal narrative where architecture, interiors, and fine art intersect," explains Jane Lockhart, principal designer and founder of the Mississauga-based studio established in 1997. "Rather than treating art as an accessory, the design was intentionally developed to frame, elevate, and honour it."
Lockhart emphasizes that every element, from sightlines and lighting to materials and detailing, was meticulously considered to showcase the homeowner's photography within a warm, highly livable environment. This approach ensures the artwork remains the focal point, supported by a serene backdrop.
Architectural Details and Modern Mediterranean Style
The three-story home, which includes a basement and two above-ground floors, features most living spaces on the main level. Its Modern Mediterranean styling blends natural beauty with contemporary aesthetics, incorporating plants, warm tones, and natural materials. The design process spanned approximately one year, resulting in a space that exudes modern warmth through textured wood tones and custom wood panelling throughout.
Key features include:
- A foyer with a wooden staircase and glass panelling, establishing a sense of "quiet reverence" through craftsmanship and marble flooring.
- A spacious living room where gallery-style photography takes center stage.
- A kitchen equipped with modern appliances, a built-in wine rack, and a nearby bar station.
- Unique light fixtures in the kitchen, dining room, and primary bedroom.
Homeowner's Artistic Vision and Collaboration
The homeowner, an accomplished visual artist who prefers anonymity, specializes in capturing landscapes, architecture, and natural details. "I'm drawn to the play of shadows, patterns, and colours in nature—whether it's the grey of rocks, the vibrant hues of fall leaves, or the graceful flow of water," she shares. She often enhances her photos using Photoshop and Lightroom, adding filters and textures for an artistic touch.
Having renovated and built numerous properties with her husband since their marriage, the homeowner describes herself as inspired by design, trends, and timeless classics. "I love colour, beauty, and peaceful environments, and I strive to create indoor spaces that flow seamlessly with the outdoors, mirroring what I see outside my window," she notes.
This project marks a 15-year collaboration with Lockhart, resulting in a home that feels lived-in and vibrant. "It's not our family home—our kids didn't grow up here—but it feels balanced by the materials we chose, such as neutral colours, stonework, wallpaper, cozy fabrics, and white oak panelling that connects the rooms," the homeowner reflects.
Result: A Refined and Immersive Living Experience
The final design achieves a refined, immersive atmosphere where layered natural materials create a warm and tactile backdrop. Lockhart concludes, "These elements of Modern Mediterranean styling act as a supporting framework, providing a natural, light-reflective canvas that enhances the artwork rather than competing with it." This Markham home stands as a testament to how personal artistry can elevate residential design into a gallery-like sanctuary.
