Why National Donut Day Is Celebrated on the First Friday of June
National Donut Day: History and Celebrations on June 5

National Donut Day, observed on the first Friday of June, has a rich history dating back to World War I. This year, the celebration falls on June 5, with donut lovers across Canada and the United States enjoying sweet treats and special promotions.

Origins of National Donut Day

In 1917, during the First World War, members of The Salvation Army were stationed in France near the front lines. They provided spiritual and physical support to U.S. soldiers, including comfort food. Donuts, quick and easy to make even in challenging circumstances, became a symbol of their efforts. The 'Donut Lassies' of The Salvation Army who prepared and served these donuts gained fame, especially as soldiers returned home after the war.

In 1938, National Donut Day was established in Chicago as a salute to the Donut Lassies and a fundraiser during the Great Depression. The commemoration has since grown into an international event.

“Today, the gift of a donut symbolizes The Salvation Army’s ongoing commitment to support the many in need throughout our great nation,” said Capt. Gina Haggett of The Salvation Army.
