Francis "Fran" Deck, who owned and operated the iconic Toronto diner Fran's Restaurant for decades, has died at the age of 89. His family announced his passing, noting his dedication to preserving the values of hospitality, community, and accessibility that made Fran's a household name across generations.
From a 10-Seat Diner to a Toronto Institution
Fran's Restaurant was founded in 1940 by G. Francis "Fran" Deck, the father of the deceased. The original location opened at Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue as a modest 10-seat diner. Over time, it grew into one of the most iconic restaurants in Toronto, eventually expanding with multiple locations across the city.
The original restaurant was famous for operating around the clock, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It appealed to everyone, from local residents to people from outlying suburbs who knew it was the place to eat. Fran Deck took over the business from his father and stewarded it for decades, building on the legacy his father had created.
Family Remembers a Legacy of Hospitality
In a news release, Deck's family said he dedicated his life to the restaurant and will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former colleagues, loyal customers, and the many people whose lives he touched throughout the city. His grandson, Kyle Ecclestone, also spoke of Deck's legacy, saying it was not just about food but also about family and community.
"My Papa's love for family and food was something that extended beyond the walls of the restaurant," Ecclestone said in a family statement. "His stories, his jokes, and the time we shared together will not be forgotten."
Fran's Sale and Continued Operation
By the late 1990s, restaurateurs Joon and Mi Sook Kim acquired the business and opened more locations. A new restaurant opened at Victoria and Shuter Streets in 2004, followed by another on Front Street near Yonge in 2010. The latter closed 10 years later after the second lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Robert Kim, one of Joon and Mi Sook's sons, expressed the family's sentiments in a statement: "When my family took the reins from the Deck family in 1998, we quickly realized just how special Fran's was to so many people. His pride in Fran's, its people, and its place in Toronto was unmistakable. Through his stories, it was easy to see why Fran's has remained such a beloved gathering place for more than 85 years."
Kim added: "We are proud to continue the legacy that Fran Jr. and the Deck family built, and our thoughts are with the Deck family during this difficult time."
Fran's Restaurants Today
Two Fran's restaurants remain in the city: the College and Yonge Streets location, which opened in 1950, and the Victoria and Shuter Streets location. Funeral and memorial details have not yet been announced by the family.
