A kayaker is dead and another has been rescued after their vessel capsized in strong winds on Okanagan Lake near Kelowna, British Columbia, on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. The incident occurred in the afternoon when sudden gusts of wind overturned the kayak, leaving both occupants in the water.
Rescue and Recovery
Emergency services responded to reports of a capsized kayak around 2:30 p.m. local time. First responders arrived to find one individual unconscious and unresponsive. They were pronounced dead at the scene. The second occupant was rescued and taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to officials.
“The conditions on the lake changed very quickly, and unfortunately, the kayakers were caught off guard,” said a spokesperson for the Kelowna Fire Department. “We urge everyone to check weather forecasts and be prepared for sudden changes in wind.”
Weather Conditions
Environment Canada had issued a wind warning earlier in the day for the Okanagan Valley, predicting gusts up to 50 km/h. The area had been experiencing unseasonably warm temperatures, which can create unstable conditions over the lake.
“Winds can be particularly dangerous for small watercraft like kayaks,” said a meteorologist with Environment Canada. “Even experienced paddlers can be overwhelmed by sudden gusts.”
Safety Reminders
Authorities are reminding boaters and kayakers to wear life jackets at all times, carry communication devices, and monitor marine weather forecasts before heading out. The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
