A motorist from Sudbury is facing a serious stunt driving charge following a high-speed incident on a major northern Ontario highway. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported clocking the vehicle at a staggering 153 kilometres per hour on Highway 69, south of the city.
Details of the High-Speed Traffic Stop
The incident occurred on November 29, 2025. According to the OPP, an officer monitoring traffic on Highway 69 recorded the vehicle travelling at more than double the posted speed limit in that area. The driver, a resident of Sudbury, was immediately pulled over by police.
As a result of the extreme speed, the driver was not simply issued a speeding ticket. Instead, the officer laid a charge of stunt driving under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. This charge is applied when a motorist is caught driving 40 km/h or more over the speed limit on roads with a maximum speed of 80 km/h or less, or 50 km/h over on highways with higher limits.
Severe Consequences for Stunt Driving
A stunt driving charge in Ontario carries immediate and severe penalties designed to act as a strong deterrent. Upon being charged, the driver's vehicle was almost certainly impounded for a period of 14 days at the roadside.
Furthermore, the driver's licence was suspended automatically for 30 days. If convicted in court, the individual faces a minimum fine of $2,000 and a further licence suspension of up to two years for a first offence. Multiple convictions can lead to jail time. The charge also results in six demerit points on the driver's record and can cause insurance premiums to skyrocket.
