Maple Leafs Acquire Darren Raddysh in Sign-and-Trade with Lightning
Leafs Land Raddysh in Sign-and-Trade Deal with Lightning

The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a significant move to bolster their defence, acquiring Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning in a sign-and-trade deal. The 30-year-old native of the Greater Toronto Area was considered the top unrestricted free agent blueliner and was expected to command a high price in a seller's market.

According to reports, the contract is for eight years with an average annual value of approximately US$8 million. The Leafs will send a fifth-round pick to Tampa Bay for the exclusive negotiating rights. This strategy mirrors previous moves by Toronto, including the trade that sent Mitch Marner to Vegas and the acquisition of Chris Tanev from Dallas.

Chayka Confirms Acquisition

Maple Leafs General Manager John Chayka confirmed the deal, stating: "We are thrilled to add a defenceman of Darren's calibre to our team. Darren has emerged as one of the NHL's premier two-way defencemen, combining elite puck-moving ability with poise, competitiveness, and strong play in all three zones. He strengthens our blue line in every situation and is exactly the type of player we want helping lead this team."

Cap Space Moves

Earlier in the week, Toronto began clearing cap space by trading goaltender Joseph Woll and defenceman Simon Benoit to Philadelphia for restricted free agent defenceman Emil Andrae. The Leafs had approximately $27 million in cap space before the Raddysh deal.

Raddysh, who grew up in Caledon and played junior hockey with the Erie Otters, went undrafted and spent four years in the minors before making his NHL debut with the Lightning in 2021. By the 2023-24 season, he appeared in all 82 games, recording six goals and 27 assists. In his career year of 2025-26, he posted 22 goals and 48 assists, showcasing a heavy right-handed shot that will boost Toronto's power play.

It remains unclear whether Chayka will ask defenceman Morgan Rielly to waive his no-trade clause or attempt to fit both players under the salary cap. The Maple Leafs continue to explore additional moves to strengthen their roster.
