Kia Debuts Redesigned 2027 Seltos with Hybrid Powertrain at New York International Auto Show
At the 2026 New York International Auto Show, Kia unveiled the all-new 2027 Seltos, marking a significant redesign for this popular subcompact SUV. Kurt Kahl, Chief Designer at Kia Design Center America, presented the vehicle, highlighting its evolution from the first-generation model launched in 2021. The new Seltos blends design cues from the larger Telluride and the all-electric EV9, offering a sporty, dynamic look with a boxy profile and short overhangs.
Enhanced Dimensions and Interior Comfort
The second-generation Seltos is notably larger, with increases in length (4.5 cm), width (3 cm), and wheelbase (6 cm). This expansion translates to improved legroom and headroom, particularly in the rear seats, addressing a common critique of the previous model. Cargo space has also grown, now offering up to 786 litres behind the rear seats, making it more practical for daily use and longer trips.
Powertrain Updates and New Hybrid Option
Powertrain options include a carryover 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder with a CVT for lower trims and a 190-horsepower 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an eight-speed automatic for higher trims. The standout addition is a new hybrid powertrain, the first for the Seltos, featuring a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Kia also introduces e-AWD as an option on the hybrid model, likely using an electric motor for rear-wheel drive, similar to systems in competitors like the Toyota Corolla Cross.
Premium Features and Competitive Landscape
The Seltos continues its tradition of offering premium features uncommon in the subcompact segment. Updates include a panoramic sunroof, larger screens, a 360-degree camera, and expanded automated driver assistance systems like forward collision avoidance and parking sensors. The interior design now mirrors Kia's EVs, such as the EV3, but retains hard buttons for climate control and other functions for ease of use.
In the crowded subcompact SUV market, which includes rivals like the Honda HR-V, Toyota Corolla Cross, Subaru Crosstrek, and Mazda CX-30, the Seltos distinguishes itself with a well-equipped interior and diverse powertrain choices. The new hybrid option positions it competitively against few hybrids in the category, such as the Corolla Cross and Hyundai Kona hybrid.
Availability and Pricing
Pricing details will be announced closer to the Seltos's summer launch, with the hybrid variant expected later in the year. This update aims to bolster the Seltos's appeal as gas prices rise, potentially making it a top choice for eco-conscious buyers seeking style and efficiency in a compact package.
