Interior decorator Virginie Martocq shares expert advice on transforming a Collingwood chalet into a cozy, modern retreat that prioritizes comfort without sacrificing style. The homeowner, Rebecca, sought a warm and welcoming atmosphere that could withstand the presence of two large black dogs, avoiding any overly precious design elements.
Fireplace Transformation
The room's central feature, a stone fireplace, was deemed overbearing. Martocq suggests cladding it in wood planks using yakisugi, a traditional Japanese method of charring wood for preservation. This would create a dramatic, dark focal point. Alternatively, applying a stone stain in a grey or blue-grey tone can tone down the yellow cast of the existing stone. For safety, a fire-resistant material like honed slate or black marble should surround the fireplace opening.
Color Palette and Walls
Painting the walls a deep grey-black, such as Iron Ore by Sherwin-Williams, is recommended. Despite initial hesitation, this dark hue can make the space feel special and surprisingly larger. If the stone is stained, painting the window mullions black while leaving the frames and sills natural wood adds cohesion.
Furniture and Layout
Martocq advises replacing the kitsch wagon wheel table with a large square table in thin dark steel, marble, or dark wood. Side tables in cast concrete or stone with antique brass finishes are ideal. For seating, a dark grey velvet sectional offers luxurious comfort and reflects light even in dark colors, while caramel leather club chairs add warmth. A large rug in sisal or a geometric Persian pattern complements the textured room.
Lighting and Accessories
Place a long console table behind the sofa for lamps with dark clay bases, linen shades, and brass accents to uplight the dark walls and provide reading light. Faux fur pillows in white lion or similar styles add a touch of luxury without being overly delicate.
This makeover balances modern aesthetics with cozy functionality, creating a welcoming space for both the homeowners and their dogs.
