Teen Arrested in Northern Alberta Over Online School Shooting Threats
Teen Arrested in Alberta Over Online School Shooting Threats

Three firearms have been seized following the arrest of a Fort McKay teenager accused of posting school shooting threats on social media. The 17-year-old girl was arrested on May 23 after Wood Buffalo RCMP received information related to statements made on social media about “engaging in a school shooting.” Police say the suspect, who they subsequently charged with indecent communications, cannot be named.

Arrest and Initial Charges

The teenager was released from custody on an Undertaking with Conditions. However, weeks later, police received additional information regarding further online threats relating to unspecified “school, daycare and mall shootings” from an “unknown user.” According to police, officers subsequently arrested the same teenager again at her Fort McKay home on June 26.

Seizure of Firearms and Electronic Devices

Three weapons were allegedly confiscated during the arrest, including an Airsoft pistol, a rifle-style pellet gun, and a .22 caliber rifle. Electronic devices were also seized. The suspect is currently set to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on July 7.

Police Response and Community Safety

Wood Buffalo RCMP Acting Officer Troy Switzer said police “recognize that threats of violence cause significant concern in the community” and that they “continue to treat all such incidents with the highest priority.” In the same news release, police said there is no current threat to the public and reasonable measures were taken to mitigate unsafety throughout the investigation.

Parental Guidance and Vigilance

Parents are being encouraged to stay vigilant and have conversations about online activities and safety with their children; staying aware of what they post, who they interact with, as well as setting appropriate boundaries and parental controls. As investigations are still underway, police continue to treat the matter with the highest priority to ensure community safety.
