Novartis Canada and pCPA Reach Deal for Scemblix

Novartis Pharmaceuticals Canada Inc. announced the successful conclusion of negotiations with the pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance (pCPA) for public reimbursement of Scemblix (asciminib tablets) for adult patients with newly diagnosed Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML) in chronic phase.

Milestone Agreement for CML Treatment

This agreement marks a significant step in ensuring timely access to innovative therapies for Canadians living with CML. Cheryl Simoneau, Founder and Board Member of The Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia Society of Canada, emphasized that advances in treatment have transformed CML into a manageable condition for many patients. She noted that individualized access to effective options is critical, as CML is not a one-size-fits-all disease.

Clinical Perspective

Dr. Dennis Kim, a hematologist specializing in CML, highlighted that timely access to effective treatments is crucial. He stated that a broader range of therapeutic options supports more individualized decision-making, helping clinicians address diverse patient needs over time.

Regulatory Background

In July 2025, Health Canada granted a Notice of Compliance for Scemblix for adults with Ph+ CML in chronic phase, either newly diagnosed or previously treated with one or more tyrosine kinase inhibitors. With the pCPA agreement, provinces and territories can now proceed with formulary and funding decisions according to local requirements.

Next Steps for Access

Dimitri Gitas, Country President of Novartis Canada, expressed satisfaction with the agreement, calling it meaningful progress toward improving access for CML patients. He reaffirmed the company's commitment to collaborating with provinces, clinicians, and patient communities to ensure timely and equitable access to innovative medicines across Canada.

Novartis' Legacy in CML

For over two decades, Novartis Canada has led innovation in CML, advancing care through therapies that address evolving patient needs. With continued innovation including Scemblix, the company remains dedicated to improving outcomes and quality of life for people living with this disease.
