New York Teen Vanishes After Meeting Roblox Contact in Manhattan
A Long Island family is desperately searching for their 15-year-old son who disappeared after traveling to New York City to meet someone he connected with through the popular online gaming platform Roblox. Thomas Medlin, a student at Stony Brook School, has been missing since January 9th, when he left school and boarded a train to Grand Central Terminal.
Disappearance Details and Police Investigation
According to Suffolk County Police, Medlin was last seen around 5:30 p.m. on January 9th at Grand Central station in Manhattan. Security footage captured the teen at the iconic transportation hub, but his whereabouts since remain unknown. The police department issued a news release on January 12th confirming the details of his disappearance and circulating his photograph to aid in the search.
Medlin's parents, Eva Yan and James Medlin, describe their son's behavior as completely out of character. "He has never left our side," Yan told reporters, expressing both confusion and concern about what prompted her son to travel to the city alone. "I just can't believe why he left in the first place," added James Medlin, highlighting the family's distress.
Roblox Safety Concerns and Company Response
The incident has reignited discussions about online safety, particularly regarding platforms popular with younger users. Roblox, which boasts nearly 83 million daily active users with 42% under age 13, responded to inquiries about the situation through a company spokesperson.
"We are deeply troubled by this incident and are working with law enforcement to support their investigation," the spokesperson stated. "Roblox is built with safety at its core, including robust policies to help protect users that go beyond many other platforms."
The company emphasized its safety features, including filters designed to block personal information sharing and the absence of user-to-user image or video sharing capabilities. Parents also have the option to disable the game's in-chat function, though the effectiveness of these measures continues to be scrutinized.

This disappearance occurs against a backdrop of increasing concerns about online predators targeting young users through gaming platforms. In March 2024, a 13-year-old girl with learning disabilities was reportedly groomed by a stranger on Roblox who offered in-game credits before moving their conversation to Discord and requesting explicit photos.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against Roblox in November 2025, alleging the company violated state and federal online safety laws. "Roblox markets itself as a safe digital space of creativity, but in reality it has become a breeding ground for predators," Paxton declared in a news release. Texas became the third U.S. state to take legal action against the gaming giant, following similar lawsuits in Kentucky and Louisiana.

Medlin's family and friends have organized search parties in both Long Island and New York City, hoping to find any trace of the missing teenager. "Everyone loves him," Yan said, describing her son as a beloved member of their community.
