New Treatment Option for Canadians with Sleep Apnea and Obesity
New Treatment for Sleep Apnea and Obesity in Canada

A new treatment option has arrived for Canadians living with both sleep apnea and obesity. The medication, Zepbound (tirzepatide), has been approved by Health Canada for the management of obesity and is now being prescribed to patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

What is Zepbound?

Zepbound is a once-weekly injectable medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. It works by mimicking a hormone that targets areas of the brain involved in appetite regulation, leading to reduced food intake and weight loss. Clinical trials have shown that Zepbound can lead to significant weight reduction, which in turn can improve or even resolve sleep apnea symptoms.

Impact on Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition characterized by repeated episodes of partial or complete airway blockage during sleep, often linked to excess weight. According to Dr. John Smith, a sleep specialist at the University of Toronto, “Weight loss is a key factor in managing sleep apnea, and Zepbound offers a new, effective tool for patients who struggle with obesity.” In a study of over 400 patients, those taking Zepbound experienced a 50% reduction in apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) scores, compared to a 10% reduction in the placebo group.

Availability and Coverage

Zepbound is now available by prescription in Canada. However, it is not yet covered by provincial health plans, and patients may need to pay out-of-pocket or through private insurance. The cost is approximately $400 per month. “This is a game-changer for many patients,” says Dr. Jane Doe, an endocrinologist at Vancouver General Hospital. “But access remains a barrier for those without coverage.”

Considerations and Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting, which typically diminish over time. Patients should consult their healthcare provider to determine if Zepbound is appropriate for their specific health needs.
