Glencore's Sudbury mine rescue team claimed the 2026 Ontario Mine Rescue championship, held June 20-22 in Sudbury. The team outperformed 11 other crews from across the province in a series of simulated underground emergencies.
Competition Details
The three-day event, organized by Workplace Safety North, tested teams on first aid, firefighting, and technical rescue skills. Glencore Sudbury excelled in the underground scenario, which involved a mock explosion and multiple casualties. The team's quick response and coordinated efforts earned them the top spot.
“This win reflects the dedication and rigorous training of our team,” said a Glencore spokesperson. “Safety is our top priority, and this competition reinforces that commitment.”
Other Winners
Orla Mining's Musselwhite mine team placed second, demonstrating strong first aid capabilities. Vale's Copper Cliff team took third. The competition also recognized individual achievements, including the top first aid attendant and fire captain awards.

The Ontario Mine Rescue competition has been held annually for over 70 years, promoting safety excellence. This year's event saw a record 120 participants.
