Metro Vancouver man fined $7,000 for poaching moose

A Metro Vancouver man has been fined nearly $7,000 and banned from hunting for three years after poaching a moose south of Fort Nelson in 2022. Wing Kam Lau pleaded guilty to hunting a moose not within the open season and failing to submit a compulsory kill report, both violations under British Columbia's Wildlife Act.

Details of the case

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service (COS) reported that the investigation began after complaints were received through the RAPP line about a partial bull moose carcass found covered on Klua Lake Road. Officers launched an inquiry that led to multiple charges and a conviction at the Fort Nelson provincial court.

Penalties imposed

Lau's sentence includes a $6,998 fine, which will be directed to the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation. Additionally, he is prohibited from hunting anywhere in British Columbia for three years, and all seized wildlife parts have been forfeited to the Crown.
