A crane driver killed when his 300-ton truck plunged off the Wapiti River Bridge near Grande Prairie is being mourned by his family and community as a 'profound loss.' The man, identified only as 'G' by his employer J.D.A. Ventures, died June 16 after the crane truck crashed through the bridge railing on Highway 40 and fell approximately 50 feet into the river below.
Employer Expresses Deep Sorrow
In a statement shared over the weekend, J.D.A. Ventures expressed their grief. 'It is with deep sorrow that we share that our JDA family has experienced a profound loss,' the company said. 'Our hearts go out to G's wife, children, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.'
Emergency crews were called to the scene just after 9 a.m. on Tuesday. The crane truck and its driver plummeted into the water, and despite recovery efforts, the man was pronounced dead. The company noted that the incident has deeply affected not only the immediate family but also coworkers and the broader Grande Prairie community.
Community Support and Donation Fund
Following the crash, community members took to social media to express their condolences. Linda Fersch wrote, 'This is one of those days that stops you in your tracks. This is a well-known and respected Grande Prairie company that has been part of our community for many years. Incidents like this impact far more than those directly involved. They ripple through families, workplaces, friendships, and an entire community.'
In response to an outpouring of support, J.D.A. Ventures announced a dedicated bank account to accept donations for the worker's family. The company stated that their bank has agreed to waive all associated fees, ensuring that 100% of every donation goes directly to G's family, with no platform charges or transaction fees of any kind. Donors are welcome to include a personal message, which the company will pass along to the family.
How to Contribute
Community members wishing to contribute can send donations by e-transfer to: gfamilysupport@gmail.com. The account will display as J.D.A. Ventures Ltd., and the company said the funds are held exclusively for the family and will be transferred to them in full. The company emphasized there is no obligation to donate, but for those who are able and willing to give, the generosity will make a meaningful difference.
The crash remains under investigation by local authorities. The bridge, located five kilometres south of Grande Prairie, has been closed for repairs since the incident.
