Queensway-Carleton Hospital in Ottawa's west end is cutting 87 registered nursing positions, representing a one per cent reduction in its workforce, as the hospital grapples with financial pressures. The layoffs were announced this week and are part of a broader effort to address budget shortfalls.
Hospital cites financial challenges
The hospital confirmed the cuts in a statement, saying they are necessary to ensure long-term sustainability. “Like many hospitals across Ontario, Queensway-Carleton Hospital is facing significant financial pressures,” the statement read. “After a thorough review, we have made the difficult decision to reduce our workforce by one per cent, affecting 87 registered nursing positions.”
The hospital did not specify the exact financial shortfall but noted that rising costs and funding constraints have forced the reduction. The affected positions are primarily in nursing, though the hospital said it is working to minimize the impact on patient care.
Union and staff react
The Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA), which represents many of the affected nurses, expressed disappointment. “This is a devastating blow to our members and to the community,” said ONA President Erin Ariss in a statement. “Registered nurses are the backbone of our healthcare system, and cutting these positions will inevitably affect patient outcomes.”
The hospital said it will offer support to affected staff, including redeployment opportunities where possible. “We are committed to treating our staff with respect and dignity during this transition,” the hospital statement added.
Broader context of healthcare cuts
Queensway-Carleton Hospital is not alone in facing financial strain. Hospitals across Ontario have reported budget pressures due to inflation, staffing shortages, and increased demand for services. The Ontario government has pledged additional funding, but many hospitals say it is not enough.
The cuts come as the hospital continues to provide essential services to Ottawa's west end, a growing area with increasing healthcare needs. The hospital serves a population of over 300,000 and offers emergency, surgical, and specialized care.
