Calgary Health Foundation Invests $1M to Expand Bariatric Care Services
$1M Investment Expands Bariatric Care in Calgary

Major Funding Boost for Specialized Obesity Care in Calgary

The Calgary Health Foundation has announced a significant $1 million commitment to expand specialized bariatric care services at two key locations within the city. This substantial investment aims to address the growing need for comprehensive obesity treatment and rehabilitation services across Alberta.

Enhancing Care at Two Strategic Locations

The funding will support expansions at both Carewest Garrison Green and Carewest Sarcee facilities. These improvements are designed to create more appropriate care environments for patients living with severe obesity while simultaneously freeing up valuable acute-care hospital beds throughout the provincial healthcare system.

According to foundation officials, this strategic partnership with Assisted Living Alberta represents a crucial advancement in managing complex healthcare needs that have been historically underserved. The enhanced facilities will ensure that Albertans requiring specialized bariatric services receive continuous, long-term rehabilitation and community discharge assistance when needed.

Specific Facility Upgrades and Timelines

At Garrison Green, seven existing bariatric spaces will undergo comprehensive upgrades to become more contemporary, accessible, and better equipped to meet residents' specialized equipment requirements. These improvements are scheduled for completion by summer 2026.

At Sarcee, the funding will facilitate the addition of a new bariatric bed alongside site enhancements that will improve safety during patient transfers, personal care procedures, and rehabilitation activities. The Sarcee upgrades are projected to be operational by fall 2026.

Leadership Perspectives on the Initiative

Dr. Sayeh Zielke, executive chair of Assisted Living Alberta's board, emphasized the importance of this development in a recent statement: "This partnership represents an important step forward in addressing a growing and complex care need. We are grateful to Calgary Health Foundation for this commitment which will improve access to safe and enhanced bariatric care for Albertans."

Paul Rossmann, president and CEO of Calgary Health Foundation, highlighted the broader healthcare system benefits: "By investing in optimized continuing care spaces for bariatric patients, we can ensure they receive care in a setting designed to meet their needs, which will relieve pressure on hospitals."

Addressing a Critical Healthcare Gap

This initiative responds to the increasing demand for specialized obesity care services in Alberta. The expanded facilities will provide:

  • Enhanced rehabilitation programs tailored to bariatric patients
  • Improved accessibility features for specialized equipment
  • Better support for safe patient transfers and personal care
  • Long-term care solutions that reduce hospital bed occupancy
  • Community discharge assistance to facilitate smoother transitions

The Calgary Health Foundation's investment demonstrates a proactive approach to healthcare infrastructure that addresses both immediate patient needs and systemic healthcare pressures. As obesity rates continue to present challenges across Canadian healthcare systems, such targeted investments in specialized care facilities become increasingly vital for providing appropriate, effective treatment while optimizing overall healthcare resource allocation.
