A 12-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder after a stolen vehicle struck a Toronto police officer early Monday morning, according to authorities. The incident occurred in the East York area, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
Details of the Incident
Toronto police allege that the boy was driving a stolen vehicle that collided with an officer on the Leaside Bridge. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) reported that officers had responded to a vehicle theft call near Donlands Avenue and O’Connor Drive shortly after 1 a.m. Two cruisers attempted to box in the vehicle on the bridge, but the driver fled and struck an officer who was outside his cruiser.
Charges Filed
The 12-year-old faces multiple charges, including theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation, failing to stop for police, assaulting a peace officer, and leaving the scene of an accident. Due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the boy cannot be named publicly.
Officer and Suspect Injuries
The injured officer was taken to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was later released. The boy was apprehended on foot and also taken to the hospital with serious injuries that were not life-threatening, the SIU confirmed.
Ongoing Investigation
The SIU, which investigates incidents involving police that result in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault, is looking into the case. One officer fired multiple shots to stop the vehicle, which was carrying two other children aged 12 and 13. It remains unclear whether the shots were fired before or after the vehicle struck the officer. The vehicle fled the scene but was later located along with the driver nearby. Toronto police stated that more information will be released in a forthcoming media statement.
