Windsor police charged three drivers with impaired operation on Canada Day, as officers conducted enhanced enforcement across the city. The charges were laid during a holiday blitz targeting alcohol and drug-impaired driving.
Details of the Arrests
According to Windsor Police Service, the three incidents occurred at various locations throughout the day. In one case, an officer observed a vehicle driving erratically near the downtown core. The driver, a 34-year-old local resident, was stopped and subsequently failed a roadside sobriety test. A second arrest took place in the east end after a traffic complaint, while the third involved a driver stopped at a RIDE checkpoint in the south end.
All three individuals now face charges under the Criminal Code for impaired driving. Their licenses were suspended for 90 days, and their vehicles impounded for seven days, as per Ontario's Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension program.
Broader Enforcement Context
The Canada Day enforcement is part of a larger initiative by Windsor police to reduce impaired driving during holiday periods. In a statement, Sergeant Steve Betteridge said, “Impaired driving remains a leading cause of preventable deaths on our roads. Our officers are committed to ensuring everyone celebrates safely.”
Police did not release the names of the accused, as charges have not yet been proven in court. The individuals are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Windsor at a later date.
Community Impact
Windsor police remind the public that impaired driving encompasses not only alcohol but also drugs, including cannabis and prescription medications. The force encourages residents to plan ahead, designate a sober driver, or use public transit or ride-sharing services.
