According to the FBI, the suspect used an online messaging application to communicate with an undercover officer between May 6 and June 15. The officer was posing as the mother of a pre-teen girl. The communications allegedly involved the man expressing his intention to engage in sexual acts with the purported minor.

The suspect traveled from Ottawa to Nashville on June 15, where he was taken into custody by law enforcement authorities.

Charges Filed

The FBI identified the accused as Alexander Towns, 44. As of now, no Canadian home address has been provided. Towns faces charges of distribution of child pornography and attempted online enticement of a minor.

The FBI release emphasizes that a complaint is merely an allegation and that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Potential Penalties

If convicted, Towns could face a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. No trial date has been set yet.
