Mother Cycles for Son in Kids Cancer Care Ride of Courage

Dale Zukowski doesn't consider herself a rider. Yet she mounts her bicycle each year for the Kids Cancer Care Ride of Courage, pedaling in memory of her son Joel, who lost his life to cancer.

A Mother's Mission

Zukowski participates in the annual event to honor Joel and support other families facing childhood cancer. The ride, which covers distances from 25 to 200 kilometers, raises funds for pediatric cancer research and support programs through the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta.

“I’m not a cyclist, but I ride for Joel,” Zukowski said. “It’s my way of keeping his memory alive and helping other kids.”

Ride of Courage Details

The 2026 Ride of Courage took place on June 21, drawing hundreds of participants across multiple routes. Since its inception, the event has raised over $5 million for childhood cancer initiatives, according to the foundation.

Zukowski completed the 50-kilometer route this year, joined by family and friends who formed Team Joel. “The support from the community is overwhelming,” she added. “It gives me strength.”

Impact on Families

The Kids Cancer Care Foundation provides financial assistance, counseling, and recreational programs for children with cancer and their families. Funds from the ride directly support these services, which reach more than 1,000 families annually in Alberta.

“Every dollar raised makes a difference,” said foundation CEO Sarah Thompson. “Dale’s dedication embodies the spirit of the Ride of Courage.”
