A Richmond Hill man has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of his former girlfriend, a Russian model. Daniil Matin, 38, received the sentence on Wednesday, with no chance of parole for 25 years. He was convicted of first-degree murder in March by a jury in Newmarket.
Reconciliation turned fatal
Marina Nagolia, 43, had ended her four-year relationship with Matin and was ready to move on. However, Matin was desperate to rekindle the romance. Prosecutors stated that the former couple argued when she rejected his attempts at reconciliation. Just two days after Matin returned from a vacation in Cuba, Nagolia was found dead.
According to police, Nagolia made the fatal error of allowing Matin into her Richmond Hill home. He repaid her trust by killing her during the commission or attempted commission of a sexual assault. Matin repeatedly stabbed Nagolia, and she ultimately died from neck compressions. Matin was later found with self-inflicted stab wounds, apparently attempting to slash his throat.
Gruesome discovery
York Regional Police responded to a welfare check at the home on August 25, 2023, and made the grim discovery of Nagolia's body. Matin was arrested and initially charged with second-degree murder. Investigators also recovered a broken metal knife found in Nagolia's left hand. Prosecutors argued that Matin placed the broken knife there to cover up his crime.
Matin took extensive steps to conceal the murder, including trying to remove blood from Nagolia's bed. His intention was to make it appear as though his injuries were inflicted by his former partner. In addition to the prison sentence, Matin received a lifetime weapons ban and was ordered to have no contact with Nagolia's relatives.
