London, Ontario has joined a new cross-border initiative aimed at attracting water-centered businesses along the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. The city is now part of a coalition of 425 municipalities that have signed the Great Lakes Declaration, a commitment to promote sustainable economic development and environmental stewardship in the region.
Cross-Border Collaboration for Economic Growth
The declaration emphasizes the importance of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway as a vital economic corridor. By joining this initiative, London aligns with other cities in the United States and Canada to foster innovation, create jobs, and protect water resources. The partnership focuses on sectors such as marine technology, water treatment, and tourism.
Benefits for London and the Region
Mayor Josh Morgan highlighted that the declaration will open doors for investment and collaboration. London's participation is expected to enhance its profile as a hub for water-related industries and research. The initiative also supports environmental protection efforts, including pollution reduction and habitat restoration.
The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway system supports over 200,000 jobs and generates billions in economic activity annually. By working together, member cities aim to amplify these benefits while addressing challenges like climate change and invasive species.
London joins other Ontario municipalities such as Toronto, Hamilton, and Kingston in the declaration. The initiative is coordinated by the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, a binational coalition of mayors and local officials.
