Letters to the Editor: Readers React to Arbour's Appointment and More
Letters: Arbour as GG, OAS Increase, and Liberal Tactics

A GOOD CHOICE: I was delighted to learn that Louise Arbour has been appointed as the next Governor General of Canada. Throughout my adult life, she has been a significant influence and role model. From my time as a student at Osgoode Hall Law School in the late 1970s to my law practice during her tenure on the Supreme Court of Canada, she was someone to admire. Later, during my 22 years with the Immigration and Refugee Board, she continued to inspire me as the High Commissioner of the UNHCR. Congratulations to our new Governor General. Canada continues to make its mark on the world.

Jim Dandy, Niagara Falls, Ont.

COSTLY ROLE: Most Canadians probably do not care who the new Governor General is. Please stop the colossal waste of money. This is not your personal piggy bank. Each successive Governor General says things will improve, but they only get worse. Stop it.

PAY FOR THEE, NOT FOR ME: My wife and I received an increase in our Old Age Security for April. The amount was $1.64 for both of us. Wow. When I read about the annual salary increases for the prime minister, cabinet ministers, parliamentary secretaries, MPs, and the Governor General, I truly believe something is wrong. What can we do about it? Nothing.

MUZZLING CRITICS: Re 'Power mad move by the Liberals' (Editorial, May 3): Regarding the Liberals' latest moves to override parliamentary purpose with their committee shenanigans, it makes one wonder what they are hiding that they fear will damage their standing once uncovered. Their obsession with muzzling the opposition suggests they have much to be afraid of in terms of what will come to light.
