Weekend Blazes Damage Three Windsor Homes, Displacing 12 Residents

Windsor Fire & Rescue Services crews were kept exceptionally busy over a bitterly cold weekend, responding to two significant residential fires that resulted in substantial property damage and displaced a total of twelve people from their homes.

Major Oak Avenue Fire Causes Extensive Damage

On Sunday, emergency crews were dispatched to the 1000 block of Oak Avenue, where they encountered a working fire at a two-storey house. Fire Prevention Officer John Smith detailed the challenging conditions on social media, noting that the crew of Engine 4 faced intense fire, heat, and thick smoke on the second floor while conducting primary search operations and attempting to locate the blaze's origin.

A second crew of firefighters provided crucial assistance on the second floor after successfully clearing the basement and first floor. In total, twenty-five firefighters battled the inferno, which had extended from the home's second floor into the attic space.

The scene required a multi-agency response, with paramedics, Windsor police, and Enwin Utilities workers all present. Utility workers cut off service to the structure to ensure safety. Once the fire was extinguished, an investigator arrived to determine the origin and cause.

Smith reported that the suspected cause was electrical, with the fire originating in a second-floor bedroom. The blaze caused an estimated $600,000 in damage, displacing a family of seven who are now receiving assistance from the Canadian Red Cross.

While no injuries were reported, Smith confirmed a concerning discovery: there were no working smoke alarms in the home.

Separate Dominion Boulevard Fire Damages Home and Vehicle

On Saturday, crews responded to another significant fire at a South Windsor property in the 3100 block of Dominion Boulevard. This blaze began in a detached garage but unfortunately spread to an adjacent single-storey home.

The fire resulted in approximately $350,000 in damages to the house, with an additional $20,000 in damage to a vehicle. Smith stated that the cause of this garage-originating fire remains undetermined at this time.

While this incident also resulted in no injuries, it displaced five people from two different houses.

Community Impact and Safety Reminders

These consecutive weekend incidents highlight the critical importance of fire safety preparedness, particularly during extreme weather conditions. The absence of working smoke alarms in the Oak Avenue home serves as a stark reminder for all residents to regularly test and maintain their home safety devices.

Windsor Fire & Rescue Services demonstrated coordinated response capabilities across both emergencies, working alongside other essential services to manage the situations effectively and prevent loss of life.
