Alberta Homebuilders Excel at National Green Building Maverick Awards
Alberta, traditionally known as Canada's oil and gas heartland, is rapidly emerging as a significant hub for green building innovation. This transformation was prominently showcased at the 2026 Maverick Awards, where Alberta-based companies claimed half of the national honors in sustainable residential construction.
Dominant Performance at National Sustainability Showcase
The Maverick Awards, established by Built Green Canada in 2024, recognize outstanding sustainability efforts within the country's residential construction sector. This year's competition featured submissions spanning from British Columbia to Ontario, with all entries evaluated by a distinguished panel of industry experts.
Alberta builders demonstrated remarkable strength across all three award categories. Excel Homes, operating in both Calgary and Edmonton, and Edmonton's Effect Home Builders shared the prestigious Ambassador award, finishing in a first-place tie. This award specifically honors companies that actively promote and advance sustainable building practices.
Strong Representation Across Categories
Beyond the shared Ambassador victory, Alberta maintained strong representation throughout the competition. Edmonton's Landmark Homes earned finalist positions in both remaining categories, where Vancouver's Carbon Wise secured the Innovation Award and Abbotsford's Best Builders received the Transformation Maverick award.
"Our focus with the Maverick Awards is to shine a light on those integrating sustainable building practices into their projects," explained Built Green Canada CEO Jenifer Christenson. "We hear a lot about sustainability across all sectors; however, there aren't always examples to point to. By showcasing some of these, we're able to demonstrate what can be done, what is being done, and in some cases, move from conversation to actionable steps."
Consistent Excellence and Growing Momentum
Since the Maverick Awards' inception, Alberta has consistently placed at least one winner annually, demonstrating sustained commitment to green building practices. "There is incredible progress and innovation across the country," Christenson noted. "In the case of Alberta, often shadowed by a one-dimensional view of its oil and gas industry, our builders' advancement in sustainable building has shown a dramatic contrast to this."
The data supports this growing momentum. As of December 31, 2025, Built Green Canada reported a 34 percent increase in newly certified homes, including multi-unit residential buildings and renovations. High-density certified units showed an 18 percent increase from 2024 levels.
"That means there are many more living spaces added to the country's housing stock that are more energy efficient, sustainably built and verified through third-party certification," Christenson emphasized.
Proven Track Records of Sustainability Leadership
The Ambassador award winners bring substantial experience to their recognition. Excel Homes has been implementing Built Green building practices since 2007, completing more than 7,000 certified homes during that period. Effect Home Builders, a custom builder based in Edmonton, began certifying homes with Built Green in 2008, establishing a long-term commitment to sustainable construction.
These companies represent a growing cohort of Alberta builders who are redefining the province's construction industry through energy-efficient designs, sustainable materials, and innovative building techniques that reduce environmental impact while creating healthier living spaces.
The Maverick Awards success underscores Alberta's expanding role in Canada's green building movement, demonstrating how traditional energy provinces can successfully transition toward more sustainable development models while maintaining economic vitality in the construction sector.
