Several of Sydney’s most popular beaches were closed on Saturday following a shark attack that left a swimmer in critical condition, according to police. The incident occurred at Coogee Beach, prompting authorities to shut down nearby beaches including Clovelly and Bronte, approximately two kilometers from the iconic Bondi Beach.
Woman Injured in Attack
The victim, believed to be in her 30s, sustained severe injuries to her arm and leg. Police reported that beachgoers pulled her from the water and administered first aid before emergency services arrived. She was subsequently transported to a hospital in critical condition.
Increase in Shark Incidents This Year
Australia has experienced an unusual surge in shark attacks in 2026, with at least three fatalities recorded. Last month, a 39-year-old man died after being attacked at a shallow reef off the far north coast of Queensland. On May 16, a 38-year-old man was killed by a Great White Shark near Rottnest Island off Western Australia.
In January, a 12-year-old boy died following a shark attack in Sydney waters, leading to the temporary closure of approximately 30 beaches across the city’s northern suburbs due to multiple shark sightings.
Historical Data on Shark Incidents
According to the Australian Shark Incident Database, five fatal shark attacks occurred nationwide last year. Surf Life Saving Australia reported 357 coastal drowning deaths in the same period. Over the past decade, the average number of shark incidents resulting in injuries has been 27 per year, with 2.7 fatalities annually and seven incidents that did not cause injuries.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have advised beachgoers to exercise caution and adhere to closures and warnings.
