Hot and humid weather is forecast to return to Ottawa on Sunday, July 12, 2026, after a brief respite. According to CTV News Ottawa's Josh Pringle, the temperature is expected to reach 31°C, but with the humidity, it will feel like 35°C. Environment Canada has issued a heat warning, urging residents to take precautions.
Details of the Heat Event
The heat is expected to build through the morning, with peak temperatures in the afternoon. Overnight lows will offer little relief, dropping only to 20°C. The humidity will make conditions uncomfortable, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.
“It’s important to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day,” said a spokesperson for Ottawa Public Health. The city has opened cooling centers in libraries and community centers to help residents beat the heat.
Impact on Residents and Infrastructure
The Rideau Canal, a popular tourist attraction, saw increased foot traffic on Saturday as people sought shade near the water. However, the heat is expected to strain the power grid as air conditioning usage spikes. Hydro Ottawa has warned of potential outages and urged conservation.
“We are monitoring the situation closely and have crews on standby,” a Hydro Ottawa representative said. The city is also advising residents to check on neighbors, especially those living alone.
The heat wave is part of a broader pattern affecting much of Eastern Canada, with similar warnings in place for Toronto and Montreal. As climate change intensifies, such events are becoming more frequent and severe.
