Environment Canada has officially ended the heat warning and severe thunderstorm watch for Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) as of Tuesday evening. The warnings, which were in effect throughout the day, brought extreme temperatures and the threat of severe storms to the region.
Heat Warning Lifted
The heat warning, issued earlier in the week, cautioned residents about dangerously high temperatures and humidity levels. Daytime highs reached into the low 30s Celsius, with humidex values making it feel like the high 30s. The warning ended after a cold front moved through the area, bringing relief from the oppressive heat.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch Canceled
Alongside the heat warning, a severe thunderstorm watch was also in effect for much of the day. The watch warned of the potential for large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall. However, as the storm system weakened, Environment Canada canceled the watch by late evening. Isolated thunderstorms did occur in some areas, but they remained below severe thresholds.
Safety Precautions
During the heat warning, officials urged residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities, and check on vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and those with chronic health conditions. Cooling centers were opened across the city to provide relief. With the warnings now lifted, residents can expect more seasonal temperatures for the remainder of the week.
Environment Canada continues to monitor weather conditions and advises the public to stay updated on forecasts, especially as summer approaches.
