New Year's Eve Winter Blast Hits Canada: Power Outages, Travel Chaos
Canada braces for winter blast on New Year's Eve

Canadians planning to welcome 2026 are facing a significant blast of winter weather, with several cities across Ontario and Quebec contending with freezing rain, powerful winds, and hazardous travel conditions. The storm system has already caused localized power outages and disruptions, setting a frosty stage for New Year's Eve celebrations.

Power Outages and Wind Damage Reported

The impacts of the storm are already being felt. In the communities of Barrie and Orillia, Ontario, approximately 4,500 customers were left without power after windy conditions combined with ice-laden branches and trees to bring down power lines. Utility crews are working to restore electricity amid the challenging weather.

Travel has been severely affected across the region. Provincial police reported a dramatic incident on the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) where the wheels flew off a tractor-trailer. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in that incident. Meanwhile, a section of Highway 11 was involved in a crash with a transport truck and multiple vehicles, and police in South Bruce stopped a bus driver twice in one day for driving on a closed highway.

Widespread Weather Warnings and Cancellations

Environment Canada has issued various weather warnings for a large swath of the country. Freezing rain and blizzard conditions are expected to continue hammering parts of Ontario and Quebec. Northern Manitoba is also bracing for a blizzard and dangerously cold temperatures.

The treacherous conditions have led to a cascade of cancellations and service disruptions. In Guelph, Ontario, the local Rotary Club made the decision to cancel its New Year's Eve fireworks show due to safety concerns. A full list of flight cancellations and other service interruptions is being maintained as the storm progresses.

Emergency services are under strain. In Quebec, Urgences-santé reported that calls related to freezing rain and a surge in flu cases drove their volume to a near-record high. The situation underscores the compound risks of severe weather and seasonal illness.

Frigid Forecast for New Year's Celebrations

For those venturing out to mark the transition to 2026, bundling up will be essential. The forecast for the national capital calls for cold temperatures and flurries in Ottawa as the clock strikes midnight. Similar chilly and active weather is expected in many other communities celebrating outdoors.

While the weather dominates headlines, Canadians are also dealing with other serious incidents as the year closes. This includes a tragic event in the Dominican Republic, where a couple from Gatineau, Quebec, was found dead. At home, an Ottawa man's remains were discovered in a community east of North Bay, and in New Brunswick, a man convicted of killing a police officer was transferred to the United States.

As 2025 draws to a close, the powerful winter storm serves as a stark reminder of Canada's formidable climate. Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution, check on vulnerable neighbours, and consider adjusting travel plans to ensure everyone sees in the New Year safely.
