British Columbia park visitors will soon need to obtain day-use passes for three popular provincial parks as part of an effort to reduce overcrowding and manage environmental impact. The passes will be mandatory starting Monday for Pipi7íyekw/Joffre Lakes Park, next Friday for Golden Ears Park, and June 12 for Garibaldi Park, including its three trailheads. Those with valid camping reservations are exempt from needing a day-use pass.
Why Day-Use Passes Are Being Introduced
The B.C. government states that the pass system aims to provide hikers with a more enjoyable experience by reducing congestion on trails, roads, and parking areas, while also helping to conserve the land and ecosystems. Overcrowding has been a growing concern at these parks, leading to environmental degradation and safety issues.
Pass Availability and Duration
Passes will be available online starting at 7 a.m. at bcparks.ca/reservations/day-use-passes two days before your planned visit. The day-use pass program runs until October 25 for Joffre Lakes, September 7 for Golden Ears Park, and October 12 for Garibaldi Park.
Temporary Closures at Joffre Lakes
As in previous years, Pipi7íyekw will also temporarily close to recreational visitors on two occasions: from June 20 to June 27 and from September 8 to September 30. These closures provide time and space for the Lil’wat Nation and N’Quatqua to reconnect with the land in a meaningful way.
Backcountry Reservations
Backcountry reservations for Upper Joffre Lake Campground will be available on a three-month rolling window beginning at 7 a.m. on Tuesday for arrivals starting June 15. Reservations can be made at camping.bcparks.ca.
