Hundreds of firefighters are battling a deadly wildfire in southern Spain that has already claimed at least one life and forced the evacuation of several villages. The blaze, which broke out on Friday near the town of Bedar in Almeria province, has scorched more than 4,000 hectares of forest and farmland as of Saturday, according to local authorities.
Firefighting efforts intensified
More than 300 firefighters, supported by 15 aircraft and water-dropping helicopters, are working to contain the flames. The Spanish military's emergency response unit has also been deployed. Regional government official Maria Jose Sanchez said the fire is "highly active" and that efforts are focused on protecting inhabited areas.
Strong winds and high temperatures, with mercury hitting 40°C (104°F), have hampered firefighting operations. The blaze has destroyed several homes and infrastructure, including power lines, leaving some areas without electricity.
Casualties and evacuations
One person was found dead inside a burned vehicle near the town of Turre, local police confirmed. Another firefighter suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Authorities have evacuated around 800 residents from four villages as a precaution, with emergency shelters set up in nearby Almeria city.
"We are facing a very complex fire due to the weather conditions and the terrain," said Almeria fire chief Manuel Garcia. "Our priority is to save lives and protect property."

Spain, along with other Mediterranean countries, has been experiencing an unusually hot and dry summer, increasing the risk of wildfires. Climate experts warn that such extreme weather events are becoming more frequent due to global warming. The Spanish government has called for increased investment in fire prevention and forest management.
The fire is one of several that have broken out across Spain in recent days, with additional blazes reported in Catalonia and Extremadura. In total, more than 10,000 hectares have burned nationwide since the start of July, according to the Spanish Ministry of Environment.
