York Regional Police are sounding the alarm on lifejacket use after a series of recent incidents on local waterways. Police are urging all boaters and paddlers to wear properly fitting lifejackets at all times while on the water.
Marine Unit Patrols Intensified
The York Regional Police marine unit has increased patrols on lakes and rivers in the region, focusing on education and enforcement of lifejacket regulations. Officers are checking for required safety equipment and ensuring that children under 12 are wearing lifejackets as mandated by law.
Recent Incidents Highlight Dangers
According to police, several near-drowning incidents this spring could have been prevented if victims had been wearing lifejackets. In one case, a canoeist capsized and was rescued by a nearby boater. In another, a child fell overboard but was quickly retrieved because they were wearing a lifejacket.
Key safety tips from police:
- Always wear a lifejacket that is approved by Transport Canada.
- Ensure the lifejacket fits snugly and is appropriate for your weight and activity.
- Check lifejackets regularly for wear and tear.
- Children under 12 must wear a lifejacket at all times on a moving vessel.
Police also remind boaters that operating a vessel under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal and dangerous.
Community Response
Local residents have welcomed the increased police presence. Many say they have noticed more patrols and appreciate the focus on safety. York Regional Police plan to continue the initiative throughout the summer boating season.
