Ocean Week Canada is being marked across the Maritimes, including in Iona, N.S., where the Bras d'Or Lakes have a unique marine biosphere. The event, reported by Ryan MacDonald of CTV Atlantic, highlights the ecological significance of the lakes and the importance of ocean conservation.
Celebrations Across the Maritimes
Various activities are taking place throughout the region to educate the public about marine ecosystems and promote stewardship. In Iona, local organizations are hosting workshops and guided tours to showcase the biodiversity of the Bras d'Or Lakes, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Bras d'Or Lakes: A Unique Ecosystem
The Bras d'Or Lakes are a large estuary system with diverse habitats, including salt marshes, eelgrass beds, and rocky shores. They support a wide range of species, from fish and birds to marine mammals. The area is also culturally significant to the Mi'kmaq people.
Community Involvement
Residents and visitors are encouraged to participate in beach cleanups, citizen science projects, and educational programs. These efforts aim to foster a deeper connection to the ocean and inspire action to protect it.
Ocean Week Canada runs from June 1 to 8, with events scheduled across the country. The initiative is supported by the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition, which works to increase awareness of ocean issues.
