Outdoor pools open as heat wave approaches
London, Ontario's outdoor pools have officially opened for the summer season, just ahead of a predicted weekend temperature spike. The city's recreation department confirmed that all public pools are now operational, offering residents a chance to cool off as temperatures are expected to soar.
CTV London Meteorologist Julie Atchison provided the forecast, noting that a heat wave is building across the region. "We're looking at temperatures climbing into the low 30s by the weekend, with humidex values making it feel even hotter," Atchison said. The timing aligns with Canada Day celebrations, and officials encourage residents to stay hydrated and use the pools responsibly.
Safety and hours of operation
Pool hours have been extended to accommodate the expected crowds, with lifeguards on duty during all open swim times. The city reminds visitors to follow safety guidelines, including showering before entering the water and keeping a close eye on children. Free swim programs are available for families, and some locations offer accessible features for people with disabilities.
According to the city's website, pool schedules vary by location, and residents are advised to check online for specific hours. The opening follows a $500,000 investment in maintenance and upgrades over the winter, including new filtration systems at three major pools.
Community response
Local residents have welcomed the opening. "It's great to have the pools open again, especially with this heat coming," said Sarah Thompson, a London mother of two. "My kids have been counting down the days." The city also operates splash pads and wading pools for younger children, which opened earlier in June.
With Canada Day just around the corner, the timing couldn't be better. Atchison added, "We might see a few thunderstorms on Canada Day itself, but overall it will be a warm and humid holiday weekend."
