Edmonton Elks running back Justin Rankin has set his sights on an unprecedented CFL milestone: becoming the league's first player to record both 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in a single season. Rankin, who has emerged as a dual-threat weapon for the Elks, expressed confidence in his ability to achieve the feat.
Confidence in Versatility
“I believe I can do it. I have the skill set to be a 1,000-yard rusher and a 1,000-yard receiver,” Rankin told reporters after a recent practice. “It’s about staying healthy and getting the opportunities.” The 26-year-old has already shown flashes of his potential, combining for over 1,500 total yards last season.
Historic Achievement
No CFL player has ever reached the 1,000-yard mark in both rushing and receiving in the same season. The closest was former Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish, who rushed for 1,457 yards and added 740 receiving yards in 2013. Rankin’s goal would put him in elite company if accomplished.
Team Support
Elks head coach Jarious Jackson praised Rankin’s work ethic and versatility. “Justin is a special talent. He can run between the tackles, catch passes out of the backfield, and even line up as a receiver. We’re going to find ways to get him the ball,” Jackson said. The Elks are counting on Rankin to be a focal point of their offense in the 2026 season.
Rankin’s ambition comes as the Elks look to improve on a 7-11 record from last year. With a revamped offensive line and a quarterback who can extend plays, Rankin believes the pieces are in place for a historic campaign.
