Body of American Tourist Found in Banff National Park

The body of an American tourist who drowned in Banff National Park more than three weeks ago has been found. Pavlo "Pasha" Shemchuk, 25, died due to dangerous water conditions at the lower falls of Johnston Canyon on May 1. Shemchuk jumped into the water at the popular tourist attraction and never resurfaced.

On Tuesday, Parks Canada said a body had been recovered. "Mid-day on May 26, a body was reported in the Johnston Creek downstream of the lower pool of the Lower Falls, and Parks Canada initiated recovery efforts," the government agency said in a press release. "Parks Canada extends its sincere condolences to the individual's family and loved ones during this difficult time."

Visiting from Arizona

The native of Ukraine who moved to the U.S. a decade ago was visiting Banff from Arizona with his cousin and best friend when the tragedy occurred. Two days of searching for him had been suspended when the recovery was deemed too dangerous in the fast-moving water.

"We are heartbroken to share the tragic loss of our dear Pasha, who passed away in a drowning accident," said a GoFundMe set up in his honour. "Pasha was deeply loved by everyone who knew him. He was kind, genuine, and brought light and laughter to the people around him."

As of Wednesday, the GoFundMe to "help cover recovery-related expenses, memorial, funeral arrangements and any other unexpected financial obligation" had surpassed US$27,000. "During this devastating time, we are coming together to support Pasha's family as they navigate both the emotional and financial burdens that come with this tragedy," said the GoFundMe.
